Lake Manyara is one of the country’s smaller
national parks and 70% of the area is within Lake Manyara. The park is known for its elephant
population and the unusually high occurrences of lions resting in trees. There are also
many bird species recorded in the park.
The exceptionally heavy El Niño rains at
the end of 1997 reduced the land area of this park to such an extent that the favorite
site for viewing the masses of hippo and waterfowl on the banks of the Mto wa Mbu river
is still under water two years later. However, there are still many areas where you
can view and photograph many of the bird species.
