Ruaha is Tanzania’s second largest national park,
situated in the south central area of the country. It is bordered by the Great Ruaha and
Njombe rivers, which are the only source of water available to the wildlife in the dry
seasons. It is a remote park, with fewer visitors than the northern parks, and it
has a wild feel to it.
Ruaha includes many magnificent species
of mammals not found in the parks further north, such as sable and roan antelope, greater
and lesser kudu, Lichenstein’s hartebeest, Cape hunting dog and crocodile.
Over 370 bird species have been recorded in this park, including the white-headed plover
found only here and in parts of West Africa.
